Healthy, nutrient boosting smoothies

Get your daily dose of nutrients with one of these healthy smoothies, each unique and delicious in their own way.

FOR FAT LOSS
HERO: Matcha (powdered green tea)

TIP: Unlike many ingredients with weight loss claims, green tea won’t overstimulate your adrenal glands.

If your goal is fat loss, a low-energy smoothie (500 to 750 kJ) is ideal. A smoothie with a low GI level, and high protein and fibre counts, will keep blood glucose levels steady and promote satiety, curbing your hunger for longer than a high GI snack or meal. As a base, try green tea, which has been found to assist with weight control. “Green tea increases general health and improves body weight by increasing the metabolism and the body’s ability to burn fat,” says Dr Joanna McMillan, resident dietitian at NuYu. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that green tea extract was found to boost energy expenditure by around four per cent for each 24 hours.

What you'll need
Matcha, or green tea powder, makes a great base for fat loss smoothies. The high-protein, low carb merits of natural yoghurt keep conversion to glucose under control to stave off recurrent hunger, while chia seeds add fibre for digestive health and satiety. For a great fat loss smoothie idea try:
•    1 tsp of matcha green tea powder
•    ½ cup of ice
•    ½ cup skim milk
•    ½ cup natural yoghurt
•    1 tsp chia seeds soaked in 60ml of water

ENERGY BOOSTING

HERO: Coffee

TIP: To make caffeine smoothies work double time, try one before a workout, as it can help to stimulate lipolysis, or release of fat from cells.
Caffeine tends to get a bad rap for sending alertness soaring before leaving you groggy as the adenosine receptors hijacked by the drug once again connect with sleepiness substance adenosine. Yet Dr McMillan says that caffeine can be beneficial for a quick energy boost. “An espresso-based smoothie can provide a really effective energy boost, increasing your exercise level and brain performance,” she says. Caffeine can also temporarily raise your resting energy expenditure (REE), meaning you can burn more calories while doing zilch. Just don’t be seduced by commercial or café iced coffees, which are often loaded with sugary syrup and lack the nutrient profile of an espresso smoothie.

What you'll need
Cycle through different coffees until you find one that starts a party in your mouth. Experiment with different bean types, roasts and origins – there are literally hundreds of varieties.
•    1 ½ cups ice
•    ½ cup cooled coffee
•    ½ cup skim milk
•    1 tsp honey
•    ½  banana

WORKOUT FUEL
Before a workout, Dr McMillan recommends a banana smoothie made with a base of slow-release protein such as casein. Unlike whey protein, casein digests slowly, providing a steady supply of amino acids to sustain a workout. Carbs are also on the menu pre-workout according to Dr McMillan. Eating carbohydrates before exercise has been shown to increase available energy, enabling higher-intensity exercise. For recovery in the half hour following a gym session, however, switch to a whey protein smoothie, which will rush amino acids for recovery into your muscles.

HERO: Casein

TIP: To get the energy perks without potential gym-nausea, make sure the drink has left your stomach before you start training. Keep fat content low with minimal fibre, as fibre slows the rate at which your stomach empties.

What you'll need
•    1 ripe banana
•    1 cup skim milk
•    ¼ cup plain natural yoghurt
•    1 tbsp honey
•    ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

HANGOVER CURE

HERO: Coconut water

TIP: Add a slow-release carbohydrate such as mango to help stabilise your blood glucose.
If you wake up feeling seedy, a dash of coconut water may help. Coconut water contains five essential electrolytes, including potassium, to restore the toasted body’s water balance. Its lauric acid can also help with stomach cramps.

What you'll need
•    2 cups unsweetened coconut water
•    2 cups ripe mango (or frozen)
•    2–3 tbsp fresh lime juice
•    ½ cup of ice
•    2 sprigs fresh mint

6 ways to beat cravings

Retrain your brain to decrease those unwanted cravings with these 6 tips.

If your food choices disappoint your tastebuds, you’re more likely to resort to an unhealthy sweet treat to make up for feeling deprived. Here’s how you can reduce those hunger pangs.

1. Choose low-GI foods

“Foods with a lower glycaemic index (GI) of 55 or less are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolised and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and insulin levels,” says Melanie McGrice, accredited dietitian and director of Nutrition Plus clinics in Melbourne. “Low-GI foods also help you feel more sated after a meal and reduce risk of weight gain and conditions like diabetes.” Every day, aim to eat five serves or more of fresh vegetables and two of fruit plus wholegrains and some lean protein at every meal.

2. ‘Healthify’ takeaway meals with homecooked makeovers

Prepare homemade burgers with wholemeal buns and stacks of salad vegetables. Make fish and chips but grill the fish and bake large pototo wedges with a dash of olive oil.

3. Downsize your utensils

“Eating soup from a teaspoon or risotto from a small entrée fork encourages slower eating, so you feel more full and satisfied after a meal,” says McGrice. Chopsticks also encourage smaller mouthfuls.

4. Mix it up

Rigid, restrictive food regimes substantially reduce our pleasure of eating, are often nutritionally unsound and increase the risk of cravings and ‘all or nothing’ thinking about food. The Dietitians Association of Australia recommends aiming to eat 20 different nutritious foods every day.

5. Top ‘n’ tail

Roberts calls this method the ‘sandwich’ technique. “You put a moderate portion of a high-kilojoule food in the middle of a meal with lower kilojoule foods that are high in fibre and protein at the beginning and end,” she explains. This makes you feel you’ve been at a banquet. Soups make good starters and salads are a nice crispy third course.

6. Don’t blow off breakfast

Eat some filling slow-cooked porridge or eggs and dark rye toast. People who skip breakfast tend to have lower dopamine levels, shows research from the University of Missouri. This may explain why they are also more likely to crave sweet or savoury food later in the day.

How caffeine affects your cravings

Caffeine may be contributing to your sudden cravings for carbs and sugar. Here's how to prevent it.

That sustainable double shot could be responsible for your hunger pangs by 11am. Caffeine stimulates a rush of adrenalin, which puts it into fight or flight mode. As you’re not on the run from mammoths, the adrenal hormones that would once have given you energy for a quick getaway circulate in your system, making you feel depleted and worn out. This fatigue can promote cravings for carbs and sugar as the brain screams for its favourite fuel source, glucose.

Prevention:

  • Switch to herbal tea or a coffee substitute like dandelion tea – caffeine can be dehydrating.
  • Choose single shots rather than double.
  • If you must have a coffee daily, don’t have more than one.
  • Avoid energy drinks and colas, which are also high in caffeine.
  • When suffering an energy dip, stop for five minutes, drop your shoulders and slow breathe, instead of reaching for some Java.

Why you need to bring the fun back into healthy eating

We’re sure you’ve heard it all before, ‘healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring’ and it’s true.

Bianca Cheah is an advocate to leading a healthy lifestyle and making healthier choices, here she shares her insights into becoming more radiant, nourished, happy and energised.

As the founder of leading digital publication Sporteluxe and successful businesswoman she’s one of the most influential minds to when it comes to health and fitness. For Bianca, leading a healthy life wasn’t a one-time thing nor was it a sudden overnight revelation but a lifestyle she’s proud to be living. Although always having an active lifestyle with her dad introducing Taekwondo to Australia and with her mum running a few healthy cafes, her wellness philosophy is one to take note of.

So you’ve gotten this far and you’ve probably done all of the above but you find your food is so bland and downright boring? You’re not alone. “If you eat bland food, you will feel miserable and you’re more likely to abandon your clean eating,” says Cheah.

The key is to “use fresh spices and flavours and ingredients such as lemon juice on salads… eat more vegetables… and allow yourself treats in moderation.”

Be creative in the kitchen, plan and prepare and you won’t even feel like you’re on a diet because it’ll become part of your lifestyle just like Cheah.

Over time she’s found ways to tweak her diet by doing the following – so take note, there’s no prescription to a healthy living, find what works for you. Here are some ideas to start with:

  • Have very little sugar – use honey instead because it contains more nutrients.
  • Minimise intake of carbs – they make her feel bloated and lethargic – so if you’re feeling the effects, this is something to consider
  • Avoid processed foods – they really give her a feeling that is like a hangover – reconsider your choices
  • Become vigilant about avoiding preservatives, colours and additives.
  • Eat more lean protein, which is critical when you’re working out because protein makes your muscles grow.
  • Eat lots of fresh food: The more fresh the meal, the better she feels – feel the difference.
  • Enjoy a variety of vegetables, which are on high rotation in her diet.

Do vitamins boost your workouts?

If you think that vitamins, particularly antioxidants such as A, C and E help maximise your workouts, think again.

There's emerging evidence that antioxidant supplements may adversly effect:

Insulin benefits of exercise
“One previous small study found that trained and untrained people who dose up on antioxidant supplements impair important exercise training adaptations such as improved insulin sensitivity and production of special proteins that actually help defend the body against oxidative stress caused by exercise,” says Tim Crowe, Associate Professor in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University and founder of Thinking Nutrition.

Oxidative stress during and after a workout
“Now researchers have extended this study by looking at the effect of antioxidants in trained female runners,” says Crowe. “The study, which was published in the European Journal of Sports Science, found that when blood was measured, the markers that indicated oxidative stress were found to actually be higher in those taking the vitamin C.” Though it is not clear why, it is yet more proof that we don’t really understand how supplements may work differently to food in our bodies, nor are we really across the many different lifestyle impacts supplements may have on everything from sleep and stress to exercise.

How lack of sleep kills your beauty buzz

Finding you're not getting enough sleep each night? Here are 4 reasons why you NEED to get your beauty sleep.

Dullness & wrinkles
Skin loses life and luminosity when you don’t sleep for at least six to eight hours per night, says Tracey Beeby, head of training at Ultraceuticals. “With insufficient sleep, cortisol levels can rise, leading to a variety of skin dysfunctions,” she says. Your skin follows a regular schedule in cohesion with your body clock, fighting off damaging trespassers such as UV rays during the day and replenishing itself overnight. This nighttime wind-down allows for DNA repair, cellular energy production and detox, which peak after dark due to an increased blood flow to the skin. (If you often find yourself with rosy cheeks late at night, that’s your body telling you it’s time for bed.) So the less sleep you get, the less time your skin has to bounce back, leaving your face looking dull and lifeless the next day.

Acne & sagging
Severe sleep deprivation encourages the release of cortisol, a stress hormone that breaks down collagen, causing a loss in elasticity. Beeby states that these stress hormones impair the natural maintenance activities of the skin, leading to an increased rate of ageing, and also warns that increased levels of this hormone can stimulate oil production, leading to increased congestion and acne.

Puffy bags
“Lack of sleep can show as an accentuation of the hollows under the eyes, which are often referred to as ‘dark circles’ or tear troughs,” says Dr Gupta. “It can also accentuate any fine crepe-like wrinkles around the area.” So why does this happen? A lack of sleep causes deoxygenated blood vessels to dilate and flow closer to the skin’s surface. As the skin under our eyes is 10 times thinner than others areas of the face, say good morning to bluish-tinged panda eyes.

Puffy eyes
“Puffy eyes are caused by weakening of a membrane that holds fat pads around the eyeballs in our bony orbits. This weakness allows the fat pads to protrude forwards,” says Beeby. Puffy eyes may also be caused by sleeping on your stomach, which allows fluid to pool around your eyes. If you sleep on your side, you may wake to find one eye puffier than the other, so try sleeping on your back.
